Umbra Lumen

The Game:

Umbra Lumen is a small mysterious atmospheric top-down indie experience game with simple but beautiful graphics made in 7 days, for Brackeys Game Jam 2021.1.
The name, originating from Latin, means "Shadow's Light".

This is the first game that I ever published. A huge amount of work went into this, so all feedback is appreciated and encouraged!

Play on Fullscreen with audio on.

The Story:

In Umbra Lumen, you play as a ball of light, lost in a dark world, trying to find the 9 Soul Sources hidden around the map.

On your way to find these mysterious objects, you will stumble upon Seekers,
spotlights searching for you. Once you've been spotted, Hunters can locate you and try to steal your light with their spikes.

~~As a lost fractured soul, fighting the darkness, you are aware of your inevitable ending. Your future might be getting brighter, but in the end, you are bound to cling to the shadows. ~~

How To Play:

!Do not just run around. Your objective is to find objects which are hidden! Use your light to look around.

  • Movement: The movement is extremely complicated, all you need to do in order to move is CLICK!
  • Seekers: When they spot you with their light, they start siphoning your light. They slow you down and alert Hunters to your location.
  • Hunters: These bad boys once summoned will target you and attempt to spike you! You can use your light to deflect them. If you look at the spikes for a small duration of time, they will be deflected, thus turn around and attempt to cycle back only if you are still spotted by the seekers.
  • The strategy: The best strategy is to click far away at a safe place when a seeker spots you, and use your light to deflect the hunters. Try to move slowly and avoid getting detected by the seekers. Be careful not to get stuck next to the border of the map, if you find yourself close to the border while being attacked, attempt to move towards the middle.

The click movement is little weird, polygon texuture seemed plain. Awesome idea, nice athmosphere, but too long and repetetive for me! Great work

God such a simple but gorgeous design - I loved it!

At first I thought using the light to deflect the spikes was a bit clumsy, but after a couple of tries something clicked. After starting to use it properly it led to some genuinely tense moments.

Best game I've played so far. Take all the stars.

Thank you very much! It is extremely rewarding to create something that people enjoy!

That is exactly what I was going for when I was making that enemy. An enemy which makes you feel in danger but still relatively easy to handle.

Awesome game! I love the atmosphere and the contrast between the relaxing vibe of just searching the area vs trying to escape a seeker. It gets intense and difficult by the end but finishing it feels rewarding, great job rawsauce!

Thank so very much Spikes!
